Built for handheld.
Say goodbye to photoshoot fatigue with the ultra-lightweight NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S, and experience world-class mobility and freedom while capturing birds & planes from a distance. With the lightest body1 in its class at just 1390g, and a compact design measuring just 278mm, the centre of gravity of the lens is now positioned closer to the body. Providing users more control while panning. The focal length of the NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S is also 100 mm longer than the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm F/5.6E PF ED VR and 115 g lighter than the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm F/5.6E PF ED VR with FTZ.
Experience better balance with the centre of gravity positioned optimally closer to the body, allowing you more control even focusing on fast-moving subjects while panning. This super telephoto lens provides perfect control for focusing on fast-moving subjects.
The Phase Fresnel Factor.
Optimal for handheld, the lightweight and compact design is made possible thanks to a Phase Fresnel lens element. It not only reduces the size and weight of lens elements to shorter and light, but also effectively delivers a high compensation capability for chromatic aberrations.
See the stunning details.
See the beauty and detail of even the finest feathers with high-resolution images and outstanding optical performance. With the PF lens element, two ED glasses and one SR lens element, the new NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S suppresses axial chromatic aberration, creating a superior resolution comparable to the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm F/5.6E PF ED VR. Combining the use of Nano Crystal Coat, the optimised positioning of the PF lens element effectively reduce ghosting, allowing users to enjoy consistently sharp rendering power while keeping images in high resolution, even when shooting subjects at a 1200-mm range with a teleconverter.
Capture without shake.
Even at super-telephoto level with up to 5.5-stops2 VR, get the best out of your images with incredible VR performance and counter camera shake. With two modes to choose from, NORMAL & SPORT, you can also tailor your images to your specific needs.
NORMAL mode provides users with the results in optimal conditions, with VR performance equal to a 5.5-stops2 increase in shutter speed.
SPORT mode, however, is best suited for capturing unpredictable and fast-moving subjects, even during continuous shooting, because it provides a stable viewfinder image. The lightweight body perfectly complements SPORT mode when it comes to panning shots and tracking moving objects. You can also achieve a more powerful Synchro VR at up to 6.0-stops3.
Be one with nature.
Nature loves the sound of silence, which is exactly why the Stepping Motor (STM) was designed to provide users with excellent quietness and response speed. Making it perfect for shooting wild birds or other wildlife, especially when considering the reduced operational sounds during focusing and movie recording. With its fast and precise AF, it’s also ideal for shooting fast-moving subjects and videos, wildlife or motorsports, when you only have the briefest moment to react.
"The excellent AF speed really helped me shoot the fast, unpredictable subjects I work with. The powerful stabilisation is useful, too, letting me shoot hand-held even at 1/200th. It’s compact and surprisingly light for a 600mm lens, so it was easy to carry wherever I went, and the long focal length helps you remain discreet and get more authentic, striking photos."

Operation made easy.
Everything about the NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S is designed with operability in mind. Whether it's the excellent dust & drip resistance4, the ideal positioning of operational controls, or the fluorine coat for anti-fouling, every element is considered with ease of use in mind. To achieve superior dust & drip resistance, a sealing is placed on various moveable parts of the lens barrel, while a rubber gasket on the lens mount prevents anything from entering the lens. The Fluorine coat effectively repels dust or dirt, making it easier to remove if it adheres to the lens surface. Enabling you to always focus your attention on your subject, even in sudden changes of weather.
L-Fn buttons for your convenience.
The positioning of operational controls is consistent with other super-telephoto prime lenses, with non-slip rubber applied to common holding areas to offer a more stable and natural grip. With four L-Fn2 buttons and one L-Fn button that allow users to assign functions to suit their own preferences, operability and customisation are enhanced without relying on visual confirmation. While the Memory recall function5 saves frequently used focus positions to the lens to allow for quick recall.
"This lens, in combination with the Nikon Z 8 body, is very impressive. I was thrilled with the lens and quite happy with the body too. It handles shooting bursts of rapid photos with ease, and the combo was really fun to take for a spin. I sure enjoyed the time I had with both!"

Technology.
Fluorine Coat
Photographers need gear that can withstand the elements. Nikon’s fluorine coat effectively repels dust, water droplets, grease or dirt, ensuring easy removal even when they adhere to the lens surface. Nikon’s fluorine coat endures a high frequency of lens surface wiping and its anti-reflective effect also contributes to the capture of clear images.
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
Stepping Motor
NIKKOR Z lenses use a stepping motor for fast, accurate, smooth, quiet autofocus with reduced wobbling. This quiet drive system makes the lenses ideal for use when shooting video.
PF Lens
The PF (Phase Fresnel) lens, developed by Nikon, effectively compensates chromatic aberration utilizing the photo diffraction phenomenon*. It provides superior chromatic aberration compensation performance when combined with a normal glass lens. Compared to many general camera lenses that employ an optical system using the photorefractive phenomenon, a remarkably compact and lightweight body can be attained with less number of lens elements.
Short-Wavelength Refractive Lens
SR is a high- and specialised-dispersion glass lens that refracts light with wavelengths shorter than that of blue. By controlling short-wavelength light, the lens is able to achieve highly precise chromatic aberration compensation so that the colours in your images are more accurately reproduced. It also allows for more flexible optical designs, which allows for compact, lighter lenses to be designed.
Nano Crystal Coat
An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon that virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths. Nano Crystal Coat solves ghost effects caused by red light and effectively reduces ghost and flare caused by light entering the lens diagonally.
IF lens
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.
ARNEO Coat
An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon and used in conjunction with Nano Crystal Coat to further reduce ghost and flare effects caused by incident light entering the lens vertically. This allows for the outstandingly clear capture of images even when a light source is located within the frame.
Meso Amorphous Coat
Meso Amorphous Coat suppresses ghost and flare caused by incident light from any direction, including those entering the lens diagonally and vertically, to the utmost limit, demonstrating the highest anti-reflection performance in NIKKOR history. With this coating system, amorphous particles are interconnected and overlapped randomly to create a large number of air gaps termed mesopores. The many gaps within the coating form an ultra-fine mesoporous structure, attaining an outstandingly low refractive index. Additionally, a higher-precision base coat is employed to further enhance the anti-refection effect.

6Focus-breathing may sometimes be noticeable depending on the distance between the lens and the subject due to the characteristics of the lens.
*Diffraction phenomenon: Light has characteristics as a waveform. When a waveform faces an obstacle, it attempts to go around and behind it, and this characteristic is referred to as diffraction. Diffraction causes chromatic dispersion in the reverse order of refraction.
